Peanut Butter Slice and Bake Biscuits
(Great for last minute homemade gifts for friends' dogs)
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- ¾ cup smooth peanut butter
- ½ cup water
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 2 tsp plain wheat germ
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- ¼ cup shredded dried beef, saved for top of cookies
Directions
Preheat oven to 375°.
- In a pot on top of the stove, place your peanut butter, molasses, water, wheat germ and salt. Warm at medium heat.
- Melt the ingredients together, whisking quickly.
- Once melted and smooth, take the peanut butter mixture, which should now be nearly liquid, and put in a small bowl.
- Measure your flour into a large mixing bowl, and fold in your liquid mixture slowly until your dough is soft. Be sure to have a well-floured board ready to go!
- Once you have your dough mixed to the consistency you desire, turn it onto your floured board, roll it into a log shape. Place it in the refrigerator for two hours, until your dough is hard enough to slice into ¼-inch sections. If you are in a real rush, you can place it in the freezer for ½ hour until firm.
- Have a cookie sheet ready to go, and spray it lightly with a non-stick spray.
- Place your slice and bake cookies on the cookie sheet.
- Put the dried beef in a blender or food processor to chop it.
- Sprinkle the top of each cookie with your shredded, dried beef.
- Bake for 25 minutes. Turn off the oven and let your cookies dry out as the oven cools down. This will make them hard and help keep them fresh. It will also bring out the flavor and make it more intense.
- Once your cookies have completely cooled, it is time to place them in an air-tight container. You can either gift wrap them if you are giving them as a gift, or store them in your freezer up to three months until you are ready to serve them. You can also store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
To save time in a pinch, you can also make the dough and freeze it for up to three months until you are ready to use it. I love these slice and bake treats because they are fun, fast and, most of all, easy!
LUCKY, LILY & LOLA’S HOME COOKED MEAL
- 5 lbs. ground Buffalo/beef or chicken – lightly cooked
- 6 cups broccoli
- 3 cups carrots
- 1 large can pumpkin (not pie filling)
- 6 cups cauliflower
Cook ground meat lightly in large dutch oven. Grind veggies in food processor until like fine meal. (the dogs start gathering in a pack at the kitchen door as soon as they hear the food processor.) Mix together with the pumpkin and store in freezer containers until ready to use. Keep refrigerated.
I always add a nutrient powder such as Missing Link as well as Salmon Oil for their Omega 3s to their breakfast serving. I feed twice daily in a.m and evening.
This is a modified version of the diet from a naturopathic veterinarian, recommended for Lucky’s allergies. He has been itch-free since we eliminated all carbohydrates from his diet. He also has a sensitivity to some meats. I would add rice, potato or macaroni to the above diet for dogs without sensitivities.

PEANUT BUTTER BUDDY BONES
Ingredients
- 1 cup unbleached flour
- 3/4 cup unsalted peanut butter (with no additives or sugar)
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp. honey or rice syrup
- 1 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. Sea salt
Place peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, sea salt and water in a metal bowl or small pot on medium heat and stir quickly until all ingredients blend into a liquid
Put flour in another mixing blowl and slowly fold in liquid peanut butter mixture. Be prepared to keep flouring cutting board. As peanut butter dough is rolled out, reflour as needed. Because of the high oil content of peanut butter, it is necessary to flour frequently. Use a 2" x 5" bone cutter
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 25 min. Turn oven down to the lowest setting and let buddy bones get hard for about 1 hour. Turn oven off, let treats remain in oven to get bone hard!
This recipe is an honest-to-goodness 'buddy bones' to share. If you actually plan on sharing this with your best friend, remove some from the oven after 25 minutes, and do not return yours to heat unless you have teeth you don't particularly care about.
Yield: 8 2" x 5" bone shaped peanut butter buddy bones.
