Is your dog safe and happy when you go on vacation without him??

Kathy Reilly’s experience and research found that many dogs are distressed because many caregivers are lacking in information to ensure the dog stays healthy and happy.

As a professional dog trainer, Kathy added some training tips to the booklet so people can work with their dogs before leaving them, teaching them to be better socialized, relieving separation anxiety and perfecting housetraining.

The book “It’s All About Me!” contains fillable forms for up to 12 sleepovers. Information that may change with each visit, such as brand of food and quantity, medical information, vet name, and contact details is included in the form. It also allows for caregivers feedback because we all know that Mom, Dad and the kids are always anxious about going away and leaving the four-footed baby in someone else’s care. Reading about their exploits while in care, allows the family to share a little the dog’s experience.

 Mexi Mutt Rescue

Mexi Mutt Rescue brought our wonderful Lola into our lives.

After spending the first 4 months of her life on the streets of Puerta Vallarta, Lola was captured and incarcerated in a high-kill pound.  Rescued by Mexi Mutt Rescue who have a person living in Puerta Vallarta, she was nursed back to health, spayed, given vaccinations and then was transported to Canada.

Mexi Mutts depends on Vancouver Islanders travelling to Mexico to help with transporting the dogs back to Canada.  The rescue organization bears all the costs.

Lola is street smart, still a little reactive to strangers and strange dogs but after the initial noisy greeting, she plays like crazy.  She is a lovable hugger too.  She accepted our older dogs immediately and respected their place in our lives and hers.  She is Miss Congeniality with all our Social Club Dogs, playing with all of them until everyone is worn out.

Having trained many Mexican Rescues through the years, I have found them all to be healthy, loyal, smart and very willing to work for their new families.

Why Haven Society?

Having attended a great number of CAPPDT AND APPDT Dog Conferences over the years, I have become informed about the co-relation between animal abuse and family abuse. Often people will stay in abusive relationships because of threats or demonstrations of violence towards the family pets. They also hesitate to flee a situation to a safe house because pets are not allowed.  Many family shelters now have agreements with pet shelters and emergency fostering agencies to take the pets until the family is able to care for them again.  Another reason for choosing Haven Society is from a personal observation I made while visiting the facility on business.  A young girl, very thin and fragile in appearance, approximately 12 years old, was working on a white board.  She was filling in the blanks from one to ten.  I asked the administrator what the girl was doing and she explained the exercise was to list where she felt the safest. One was the most safe and ten was the least safe.   Number 1 on this list was the mall, Number 2 was Uncle Bob's, Number 3 was My Friend Holly's.  I can't remember the rest of the list but number 10 is imbedded in my memory.  Number 10 was HOME!  Haven Society is working towards changing that situation.  No one should ever feel threatened in their own home.
